Last week, the 9th EMB Forum on "Coastal and Water Resilience at the Land-Sea Interface" — an event supported by the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development and recognised as an action in support of the EU Mission: Restore our Ocean and Waters — took place in Brussels. On this occasion, Cassandra Tocco was invited to share some insights on land-sea interactions in European marine governance — a topic she explored in a recent scientific article published in the Environmental Science and Policy Journal, entitled 'Land-sea interactions in European marine governance: State of the art, challenges and recommendations'.
Pollution across the land-sea interface, along with issues related to coastal adaptation and the livability of this interface, were the central themes of the event. The forum provided an opportunity to discuss the possible pathways for strengthening the resilience of land-sea interface. The importance of local community engagement in developing sustainable solutions was strongly emphasised, alongside the need to establish a policy-science-society triangle. Finally, the role of the Ocean Pact, particularly its link to the competitiveness of the blue economy, was underscored.
